Businesses and members of the public can now purchase carbon offsets from the Climate and Pollution Agency (Klif). The scheme provides both European Union Allowances (EUA) and Certified Emission Reductions (CER) for carbon offsetting.

The Climate and Pollution Agency wishes to encourage individuals and companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Offsetting through purchase of EUAs or CERs, is a good option for emissions that can not be avoided.

EUAs and CERs purchased through the Climate and Pollution Agency will be cancelled in the Norwegian registry. This removes the emission allowance from the market. It cannot subsequently be reused by another party or company. Reducing the number of available EUAs and CERs is therefore an important and concrete step towards lowering global greenhouse gas emissions.
